About the University of Economics, Prague
The University of Economics, Prague (Vysoká škola ekonomická v Praze) is the leading university in the field of management and economics in the Czech Republic. The University of Economics, Prague has six faculties - five in Prague and one in Jindrichuv Hradec in South Bohemia. These include: the Faculty of Finance and Accounting, the Faculty of International Relations, the Faculty of Business Administration, the Faculty of Statistics and Informatics and the Faculty of Economics and Public Administration. The faculty based in Jindrichuv Hradec is specialized in management. VSE is composed of about 15 500 students who are served by more than 650 academic staff as well as about 500 non-academic staff. Sixty-one percent of VSE professors have doctoral degrees in their field.
The University of Economics Prague (hereafter only "VSE") is a public university according to par. 5 of Act No. 111/98 Codex, on Universities and the changes and amendments of other related acts (Act on Universities), (hereafter "Act"). The VSE is a university of higher learning (2 paragraph 3 and 4 of Act), providing Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral degree study programmes and programmes of life-long education. In relation to this it develops scientific, research, development and other creative activity.
The VSE was founded of date 1 September 1953 by Act No. 58/1950 Codex, on Universities, and by government order No. 40/1952 Codex, on other changes in organization of the universities, as an autonomous legal entity, a state budgetary organization and later a subsidized organization.
The legal predecessor of the VSE was the University of Political and Economic Sciences that was established by Act No. 227/1949, and on the basis of government decree No. 40/1952 Codex, its departmentalization into several autonomous schools took place, in particular the VSE was established from the Faculty of Economics.
The VSE is a legal entity according to para. 2 of Act. Its statutory body is the Rector.
The VSE executes educational, scientific research and development activities. It can also provide additional activities if they tie up with its educational and scientific, research, development, artistic or other creative activity or an activity that serves to better utilization of human resources and property.
The component parts of the VSE are, according to 22 of Act the faculties, university institutes, specialized workplaces and other workplaces.
History of the University of Economics, Prague
1919 The Commercial College (VSO) was founded as an independent department of the Czech Technical University. It had specializations in Wholesale Trade, Banking and the Organization of Industrial Companies.
1929 The VSO was reorganized and incorporated into the Czech Technical University. The study course was also lengthened to four years
1939 to 1945 Along with all other universities the VoO was closed down by the Nazis.
1949 The University of Political and Economic Sciences was founded containing the faculties of Economics, Politics and Diplomacy and Social Sciences.
1953 The University of Economics (VoE) was established consisting of five faculties: General Economics, Finance and Credit, Statistics, Production Economics and Commerce
1990 to 1991 Following the "Velvet Revolution" the VoE experienced a general reorganization
1998 The VSE became a full member of CEMS (Community of European Management Schools).
1999 The VSE became a full member of PIM (Partnership in International Management).
2005 The new premises - Rajska building was opened.
2006 The European Credits Transfer System (ECTS) was introduced.
2007 The VSE opened the Centre for Handicapped Students.
2008 EDUNIVESAL project has awarded the VSE to be the 1st Business School in Eastern European Zone.
2009 The European Commission awarded the VSE with ECTS Label and DS Label for the period of 2009-2013.
