Jindřichův Hradec
The District of Jindřichův Hradec ranks among the largest ones in the Czech Republic as to its area. Its lovely countryside is formed - on the one hand - by the mountainous area of the Czech-Moravian Highlands, reaching here through the Jihlava Hills and the Dačice Uplands, on the other hand by the Třeboň Basin, with its numerous large artificial lakes, and finally by the Novohradské Hills, infringing here from the south-west.
In the area of the Czech-Moravian Highlands there are huge romantic agglomerations of granite boulders, creating bizarre formations, including balancing boulders. It is also possible to enjoy the natural beauties of a considerable part of Jindřichův Hradec District, the so-called "Czech Canada", when you set out on a romantic trip, using a narrow-gauge railway from Jindřichův Hradec to Nová Bystřice.
Jindřichův Hradec is a town with a long history and an ancient tradition. The town was founded by Jindřich (Henry), the eldest son of Vítek of Prčice. A powerful South-Bohemian dynasty soon got hold of a castle, at that time in the process of construction, on the site of an older Slavonic ancient settlement, and a new residence was built there. In its vicinity a new town started to grow, profiting on its advantageous location, being situated on the intersection of merchants´ paths. The name of the town in the form of GRADEC can be found in old chronicles as early as in the first half of the 13th century. Throughout centuries the House of Vítek ( Vítkovci ) was superseded by other dynasties of nobles, but each of the Lords of Hradec left in this town his traces in the form of opulent buildings, which attract a large number of visitors every year. A well-situated historical core, practically untouched by later renovations and reconstructions, is an urban conservation area, the most interesting sight of which is the area of the medieval castle and Renaissance chateau. In the town of Jindřichův Hradec there is also a number of architecturally rare churches, dominated by the Church of the Assumption of Our Lady, also famous for the fact that the 15th meridian runs through one of its outside corners. The most precious ecclesiastical building in the town is the Church of St. John the Baptist with the adjacent premises of the Monastery of Minor Friars, the murals of which rank among the most significant frescoes in the Czech Republic. The building of the former Jesuit Seminary now houses Jindřichův Hradec District Museum. This museum can boast of the largest folk Nativity scene in the Czech Republic, the so-called Krýza´s Crib, the most sought-after item among the Museum´s rich collections.
Panská Street, one of the main streets of the town, links the core of the Old Town with Masaryk Square, the continuation of which is the municipal park. Jarošovská Street, parallel to Klášterská Street, another of the thoroughfares of the town, also mouths into Masaryk Square; at the other end of this street there is a small park, a former churchyard, with a Renaissance Church of the Holy Trinity, erected at the end of the 16th century. And almost opposite this small park there are the premises of the Faculty of Management, part of Prague School of Economics.
