Economic growth accelerated in 2001 mostly as a consequence of renewed recovery of domestic demand, gross fixed capital investment being the main pro growth factor. Industry, construction and retail trade showed a solid growth around 5 %. Along with economic growth, external imbalance has begun to threat, again. Both the deficits of trade balance and current account increased considerably as a consequence of the oil price and growing domestic demand. The economy generated trade deficits even in the period of deepest recession. A small open economy is prone to suck in imports whenever economic growth accelerates. A contributing factor is the high import...

Jan Kubíček
Politická ekonomie 2001, 49(3) | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.314
The paper examines whether basic monetarist conclusions can be used for explaining the devolopmnet of the Czech economy in the late nineties. Firstly velocity of money is empirically documented and classical quantity equation is applied while using redefined monetary aggregates. It is found that neither the velocity of money nor the character of inflation in the Czech Republic is in contradiction with monetarist theory. Relationship between M1 and M2 on one side and domestic demand on the other is examined in more detail on quarterly data. Influence of the interest rates and unemployment is included in the analysis. Finally simple models of trade and...

Fractional integration: an overview and results on mining sector time series
Stefano Mainardi
Politická ekonomie 2001, 49(3) | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.317
Many empirically observed time series, even when behaving as stationary processes (eventually after differencing), exhibit characteristics of extremely high persistence. Unit root tests and autocorrelation functions do not always provide unequivocal indications regarding long-run dynamic properties of these variables. This paper sets off by considering theoretical and applied developments in this field. Log-spectrum regressions, complemented with alternative estimation techniques, is applied to analyse variables of concern to the mining sector in South Africa, covering different periods and frequencies. Most of the variables are found to be fractionally...

Tomáš Sedláček
Politická ekonomie 2001, 49(3) | DOI: 10.18267/j.polek.319
Thomas Aquinas has contributed to the questions currently studied by economists more than the standard history textbooks reflect. He has been developing ideas that were later on highlited by such economists as Adam Smith, David Hume and others. This study attempts to understand the contribution to economical thought that Thomas Aquinas has made in the areas of ethics, methodology, ownership rights, just price and social solidarity. This paper also contains a selection of his philosophical views that later on influenced the developement of economic thought - arguments againts Platonic idealism and stoicism, antropology, the issue of free will.
