Title: Intercultural Research at the Department of English
Abstract: The first intercultural research project from 1999/2000 was based on Hofstede´s VSM 1994 questionnaire and it did not show substantial differences among the attitudes of students. The second research project (2000/2001) was based on 33 questions concerning general attitudes to life, the position of women in society, idealist or materialist convictions of students, and their views on politics and globalization. Differences among students appeared in answers , which disclosed masculine and materialist tendencies of Czech society. The third research project (2005/6) was conducted only at VSE. It showed growing pessimism as to the future, more optimism as to the emancipation of women in Czech society, and growing materialist tendencies and prevailing liberalism in political views.

Title: Tourism and professional English
Abstract: Regarding the fast growing importance of tourism for the gross domestic product and generation of jobs, it is necessary to make professional language preparation of future workers in the tourism industry more efficient. This does not only concern terminology and its relation to general language or creation of new terms reflecting changes in our life-style,changes in demand but this also concerns other language levels, such as so- called functional language and ESP grammar. The tourism industry is developing hand in hand with our changing demands for spending our leisure, speed and comfort during travelling, etc. All this is reflected in the fast development of professional language as a communication tool among all players.

Title: Grammar - relic or integral part of teaching English?
Abstract: University students nowadays are well equipped with language knowledge. The main weak point which remains is grammar. What is more, students often show repugnance for grammar, which results from endless drilling exercises and boring theoretical lessons. Teaching grammar is necessary as our students are exposed to English only during lessons, so they are not likely to acquire grammar just through listening to and absorbing English. As they live in the Czech environment, the tendency to combine English vocabulary with Czech grammar rules is getting stronger. Grammar lessons should not just consist of presentation of particular rules. Each rule should be shown as a part of logical grammatical system. I also recommend to compare Czech and English systems. Practising grammar has to become an integral part of teaching Process. There must not be any contrast between teaching grammar and practising communication skills.

Title: Freight Carrier`s Liability under the CMR convention 1956
Abstract: This article attempts to address some of the ways the CMR Convention 1956 removes some of the legal uncertainty and blind spots from the whole endeavour of Transporting Goods by Road. It outlines the methods used in Road Transport for allocating liability,locating the most probable point in time when any Loss and/or Damage occured to the Goods in Transit. The article also, briefly, introduces the reader to the rather complex business of making a claim for damages and the time limit for initiating proceedings.

Title: Persistent problems in professional language research
Abstract: The vaguely defined conception of a specialised language as one of the areas of the language system on one side and inconsistency in perception of its inner structure on the other side remain a problematic point of linguistics of the specialized language in German speaking countries. Reasons can be also seen in insufficient definition of the sphere of general language and unequivocal view of linguists on key terms within the specialised language - e.g. the concept of a "branch". The logic consequence of these imperfections is the absence of methodological inventory providing for the assignment of investigated linguistic material to the area of a specialised or a general language and its further classification.

Title: Problems of bilingual Czech and German hodonyms
Abstract: The research of bilingual hodonyms (names of streets) brings interesting findings not only from historical but also from linguistic point of view. The comparison between Czech and German hodonyms, which in Prague were used simultaneously for several centuries, shows that Czech names were conveyed into two ways: on the basis of sound assimilation and translation. The linguistic analysis of the above mentioned hodonyms reveals orthographic, word-forming and lexical peculiarities and differences.

Title: Rhétorique de la publicité dans le français contemporain
Abstract: Elément inséparable de la globalisation, la publicité est devenue un véhicule important de la langue, qu’elle soit écrite ou parlée. Bien que souvent considérée comme un facteur d’appauvrissemnt de la langue, la publicité utilise cependant abondamment les figures de la rhétorique classique. L’article se propose de recenser, B l’aide d’exemples, les principales figures de style utilisées dans la rédaction des slogans et des messages publicitaires en français. Il apparaît au terme de cette étude que ce sont les figures de mots qui dominent au détriment des figures de construction ou de pensée.

Title: Issues of syntax and stylistics in professional French in confrontation with Czech
Abstract: The article is a contribution in the field of stylistics concerning two typologically different languages, French and Czech. It shows some differences in syntax and stylistics of professional French in confrontation with Czech, which occur within a different type of utterance, formal and functional transpositions on the level of a sentence as a basic utterance unit. It particularly points out some typical system transpositions relating to parts of speech and constituents of a sentence and syntactic transpositions, in particular so called aspect contrasts and case relationships. Apart from the way of expressing relationships between two and more constituents of a sentence and sentences as a whole, the article also focuses on the differences in the word order and in the field of syntactic compactness of the utterance.

Title: Origin and evolution of the Spanish article
Abstract: The present Spanish article el is the product of a series of gradual transformations that took place from Latin: disappearance of the system of declensions, use of prepositions, a more fixed order of words and, especially, the loss of the deictic value of the demonstratives ille and ipse. Therefore, we deduce that the appearance of the article shows a clear tendency to substitute the morphology by the syntax.  The definite article has no lexical meaning, even though it derives from the latin demonstratives. On passing to Spanish, the article has lost the deictic meaning and has only kept the grammatical values. It points out without showing distance as regards the first and second person, in opposition to the demonstratives, although it has got the capacity of assigning the noun that precedes different values - individuation, classification, generalization, etc. Un followed a slower evolutive process than el and completed together with the absence of article what is today the paradigm of the article. It adds to the article new semantic values of indetermination, numeracy, attribution, emphasis, approximation with the plural, etc.

Title: The Quechua language
Abstract: The Quechua language is a life language which is used in Andes area of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador. Its vocabulary, gramatic rules, pronontiation and a written form are diferent in various areas. The Quechua language is an aglutinative language, it means we add suffixes to the basic word which can be cumulated. Every suffix has the only one expression - it designate e.g. pet name, appropriation, number, question..... . The Quechua languege express gramatic rules e.g. by nouns singular and plural, relationes pronounced by cases, verb tenses..., using suffixes. The paper contents a short review of gramatic. The article mentions the relation between Quechua and Aymara languages as well.
