Template-Type: ReDIF-Article 1.0 Author-Name: Marta Nečadová Title: Is GDP an Appropriate Indicator of Economic Performance and Social Progress in the Context of Globalization? Abstract: The article deals with the ability of the GDP indicator to interpret and capture economic performance, social progress and sustainable economic growth. Given the fact that the construction of indicators such as GDP does not monitor the quality of population, environmental changes or changes in stocks of non-renewable natural resources, it is necessary to take this into account (GDP is primarily an aggregate of production) and look for indicators that would allow a more complex analysis of not only economic performance, but also its social and environmental aspects. Some proposals for how to assess the sustainability of economic growth are summed up in the second part of the paper. This part of the paper is also devoted to the description of the Index of Economic Well-Being (Sharpe, Osberg). This section deals with the possibilities of measurement of households´ living standards and it also describes the Index of Economic Welfare (Sharpe, Osberg). This index takes account of other aspects of households’ quality of life (social inequality, social risks, etc.). The substance of a controversial problem called "phantom GDP" (imaginary GDP) is introduced in the last section of the paper. This effect has been described by some authors in connection with possible impacts of globalization on economic performance. The effect of "phantom GDP" is associated with a potential impact of outsourcing and offshoring on economic performance of home countries of multinational companies. The survey aims to detect the situation of the three biggest immigrant groups in the Czech Republic (Slovaks, Ukrainians and Vietnamese) and their strategies of acculturation. Berry´s theoretical concept of acculturation proposes four different acculturation strategies termed assimilation, integration, separation and marginalization. The model is based on the assumption that the way in which individuals acculturate depends on how they simultaneously deal with two fundamental issues. The first is the extent to which acculturating individuals regard maintenance of their cultural heritage as important or not. The other issue is concerned with the extent to which individuals regard contact with other cultural groups and participation in the new society as important or not. The paper reveals what effect prejudice, cultural differences, activities of expatriate organizations and other phenomena have on acculturation strategies of immigrants that are applied in the Czech Republic. It reviews the role of the media in establishing the perception of country of origin in general and its potential use as a tool contributing to the achievement of the target image of a country. Primary research concentrated on monitoring of influential international media (the global impact media BBC and CNN and 19 Russian media were analyzed) with the aim to identify factors that influenced the media perception of the Czech Republic in the years 2010 and 2011. The main factor that influenced the media perception of the Czech Republic was culture (including sports) followed by politics across all the media analyzed. Culture had a mainly positive impact, while politics a rather negative one. Cross-cultural differences in the media coverage were also identified and analyzed. The media audit conducted showed that the majority of the publicity was either neutral or slightly positive. Large corporations and vertically integrated R&D labs are giving way to distributed networks of innovation which connect different companies and organizations into innovation ecosystems. Business and technology strategies of smaller companies and public policy should follow this trend and reconsider the roles of technology, human capital, competition policy, intellectual property, and public data in promoting the environment for open innovation. Integrating technology and business trends, technology and business strategy, technology capacities with customers´ needs, technology and business processes; this requires a three-step mechanism of technology management (TM), namely integration of technology identification, implementation and potential technology commercialization processes. TM requires the creation of a functional technology network and good communication channels between strategic and technology managers, technologists and workers, and between a company and its stakeholders. This partly methodological and partly analytical study focuses on identifying the links within TM, especially in a technology identification phase and between TM and other business processes that could ensure maximum synergies and benefits for a company. Its added value also lies in the bibliometrical statistics of the ScienceDirect and EBSCOhost databases (1960 - 2010) for the identification of trends in TM. Homogenous units are the units (companies, institutions, states) that produce equivalent outputs via using the same inputs but with different intensity. As the number of inputs and outputs included in the model can be higher, the DEA models rank among the methods of multi-criteria decision-making. In this article we try to compare the not-for-profit hospitals that are situated in Vysocina Region in these towns: Jihlava, Havlickuv Brod, Trebic and Nove Mesto na Morave. In this article we compare only the Departments of Ophthalmology in the hospitals named above. All the criteria for the comparison were selected in cooperation with the Section of Health Care of the Vysocina Region which also has given all the data. This article describes results of DEA models and suggestions how to improve the efficiency of the departments. Anglicisms are very frequently used in German in the modern sphere of business. On the one hand, they contribute to a better understanding of terms used in the business and service sectors, but on the other hand, they cause misunderstanding and confuse German-speaking recipients due to their insufficient knowledge of English. A lot of linguists and politicians have criticized the overuse of Anglicisms, claiming that English has a bad effect on contemporary German. The future influence of English on Business German, as well as the adoption of English words by Business German, depends on the position held by the English-speaking countries in the world economy.
