Abstract: The aim of this study is to present the contemporary research of the Schengen area and to prove theoretically as well as empirically that the notion of Fortress Europe is only a misleading conception that the media may fi nd attractive, but which does not depict the reality fully. The reason is, that he concept of a fortress evokes a contrast between the inside and the outside. Nevertheless, the empirical data show that the binary oppositions like ´inside - outside´, ´security - free movement´ or ´EU citizens - third country citizens´ are simplifi ed. Firstly, the paper focuses on the Schengen area itself. Secondly, the contemporary research in the fi eld of the Schengen co-operation is presented. Thirdly, the study aims at the analysis of the current situation and links it to the context of the contemporary research. It presents quantitative as well as qualitative data. This is the main contribution of the paper since the current development is not very well explored. In the theoretical part of this article, we describe three indexes which currently represent options for monitoring of business cycles. The most useful indexes are the GDP, the Index of Industrial Production and the CCI. We also compare advantages and disadvantages of these indexes for the Czech business cycle. In the empirical part of the article, we analyse 127 indicators from different parts of economics and select coincident cyclic indicators that are the most appropriate for the creation of the CCI. The most useful methods in our analysis are Hodrick- Prescott fi lter and cross-correlations. Besides the creation of our own CCI, we compare this composite indicator with the GDP and the Index of Industrial Production. Then we analyse prediction abilities of Composite Leading Indicators (CLI) in a relationship with the CCI, GDP and Index of Industrial Production for the Czech economy. The issue is analysed using data on companies involved in the construction sector of the Slovak Republic. Hypotheses that the participation of companies in public contracts positively affects their fi nancial indicators are tested using a quantitative approach. The results of the regression analysis indicate that companies which contribute to realisation of public contracts achieve more favourable values of profi tability ratios compared to companies without public contracts. Nevertheless, the higher profi tability may stem from higher effi ciency of those companies or from the presence of ineffi ciency in the procurement process. With respect to the main objective and the extent of the presented analysis, it is not possible to assess which option is more plausible. At the same time, this phenomenon is signifi cantly affected by interlingual interference. Its occurrence is frequent even in the Czech language of economics but in fact also other, corresponding means of expression may be used in Czech: active constructions, refl exive passive voice, or modal expressions. This paper looks into the occurrence of different tenses in the passive voice; examines using agents in both the languages; shows the reasons for preferring passive constructions in German and for using various equivalents of these in Czech. Finally, attention is paid to continuous and state passive verb forms in German and to diffi culties in choosing correct Czech equivalents. Abstract: The article deals with the aspiration of the Chinese currency to become the world currency status. The world currency must perform as a store of value, means of exchange, and an accounting unit internationally for governments as well as the private sector. The important conditions of this position are an important share in the world’s GDP and the global trade, stability of the domestic economy, and fi nancial markets of high quality and depth. The last one is the most problematic of the given assumptions. Because of it, China has started a reform of its fi nancial sector, and this reform has been accelerated since 2012. The convertibility of the Chinese currency is planned in several stages: gradually from its use in international trade, to international investments, and fi nally in international reserves. So far, payments for trade transactions have been fully liberalised. As for fi nancial transactions, obstacles are gradually reduced. The internationalisation of the Chinese currency is taking place in the wider context of the world economy, which the text also discusses. Some partnerships of such units can create clubs of regions with a higher degree of integration process, compared to the rest, so their extent of regional integration is very high-powered. The present analysis shows that since the formation of such a unit - OECS subintegration cluster, the GDP of the involved countries has defi nitely developed better than that of the higher integration unit - the CARICOM integration cluster, and the rest of the area as well. Beyond, some higher intensity of recognised effect in the long-term period has been found. Accordingly to the discovered fi ndings, we can suggest that the emergence of similar phenomena of “integration within integration” brings clear evidence of positive development to its participants in terms of economic performance. Similar initiatives of the European Union’s Cohesion Policy - grouping of territorial cooperation support - appear to be partially correct in this view. However, the main policy’s objectives require other approaches.
