This contrasts with Summer Olympics for which about thirty studies have estimated economic determinants of sporting performances (among which Andreff, 2001; Ball, 1972; Clarke, 2000; Grimes et al., 1974; Jiang & Xu, 2005; Levine, 1974; Nevill et al., 2002; Novikov & Maximenko, 1972; Pfau, 2006). Some publications have even provided predictions about medal wins at the next Olympic Games (Bernard, 2008; Bernard & Busse, 2004; Hawksworth, 2008; Johnson & Ali, 2004; Johnson and Ali, 2008; Maennig & Wellebrock, 2008; Wang & Jiang, 2008). Our own model has exactly predicted 70% of medal wins at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and correctly (with a small error margin) 88% of the sporting outcomes at these Games (Andreff et al., 2008 & Andreff, 2010). In this paper, we would take stake of the good predictions achieved with our model for Summer Olympics to adapt it in view of forecasting the distribution of medal wins per nation at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games. Football truly reflects the life - it promotes national identity, patriotism and emotional connection of people. It encourages the youth to live healthily and compete fair, to raise educational and socio-economic standards. However, as common in life, progress and expansion are relative, both are expensive and give birth to countless new problems. As one of the main negative problems, this study brands the accelerating commercialization of sports in general - and in football particularly. The influence of the said problem is documented by specific measurements which reveal a continuously growing competitive imbalance. As examples there are three supreme national football competitions - the Eredivisie in the Netherlands and the First Czech (Czechoslovak) League in the course of the last forty years. Selected tables and figures show the trends of dynamic and static balance inside three renowned Leagues and confirm the said conclusions; the revealed trends are not marginal, but convincing, if not alarming. Because if the other conditions were being equal, not being predicted of the match result would create an enormous interest on the fans and it would increase the desire of the spectators to follow the league matches. In this study, it was determined the process of the level of competitive balance by using the Herfindahl-Hirschman index and the C5 Competitive balance index, including Turkey Sports Super League (STSL) and the Bank Asya First League (BAFD) 2002-2003 / 2009-2010 seasons. According to the evidence it can be said that there have been rough and unsteady conditions in both leagues and BAFD is more competitive than STSL. The Pioneer League (Rookie) and Northwest League (A-short season) are located in the same geographic area, but the Northwest League contains teams in larger cities, on the average, compared to the Pioneer League. The Pioneer League was shown to be affected positively by the local population size and baseball was shown to be an inferior good, while these variables were not shown to have a significant effect in the Northwest League. While fireworks and celebrity appearances had positive and significant effects in both leagues, promotions aimed at specific groups were shown to have a negative effect in the bigger cities of the Northwest League. We believe this shows a difference in entertainment possibilities between the smaller and bigger cities in this area and that promotions have different effects across leagues, even when they are in the same geographic area.
