Do Developed Economies Have a Chance to Restore Manufacturing Production?

Pavel Neumann

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):3-16 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.428

The article deals with the issue of industry reallocation among the world's countries. Originally, the core of manufacturing production was situated in the most developed centres. After the 1970s, under globalisation and the impact of structural crises, part of production has moved to developing countries. The industries have been adjusted to new conditions in the developed countries and the share of industrial production has decreased considerably in favour of services. The article addresses the question whether a return of manufacturing production to developed countries is possible and which factors stimulate/inhibit the process. Finally, the desired...

Role of the State in Economy and State Capitalism. The Case of Singapore

Martina Jiránková, Pavel Žamberský

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):17-32 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.429

The article deals with problems of state capitalism. It can be defined as maximisation of political control over economy and society and it is used as the characteristics of systems which exist in China, Russia, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, etc. State capitalism used to be effective in early periods of development when resources had to be concentrated. Corporations under state ownership are also able to compete on global markets and take advantage of their size and political support. Singapore represents an original connection of economic freedom and authoritarian capitalism. It is based on a free-market foreign-oriented economy which stresses financial...

Application of the Decision Support Model to Czech Exports

Matěj Urban, Michal Mejstřík, Jana Gutierrez Chvalkovská

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):33-47 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.430

In this paper, we present our own modification of the Export Decision Support Model (EDSM) and its application on evaluation of export opportunities for Czech companies. The main objective of the model is to identify export opportunities which might help to target the export promotion policy of the Czech Republic. The EDSM methodology is based on sequential elimination of less interesting markets. We have amended and calibrated the EDSM for the Czech Republic and created a new variable - our Index of Export Opportunities - which classifies markets depending on their suitability for export. Calibration was performed on a data sample covering global...

Additive Decomposition and Boundary Conditions in Wavelet-Based Forecasting Approaches

Milan Bašta

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):48-70 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.431

An interesting approach to economic and financial time series forecasting consists of decomposing an input time series additively into several components, each component capturing the dynamics of a different frequency range. Consequently, each component is modelled and forecasted separately, the predictions being summed up to form an overall forecast of the input time series. The present paper considers one very important aspect of the forecasting procedure. More specifically, it provides a better understanding of how an additive decomposition of the input time series into several components can be obtained using the wavelet transform and how boundary...

Key Sub-Disciplines and Methods of Technology Planning in Dynamic Environments

Marek Jemala, Ľubomír Jemala

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):71-84 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.432

The dynamic development in all areas of business brings shorter life cycles of products, technologies, as well as organisational structures and enterprises. The critical factor of many technological changes is not the technology innovation process, but finding a new application for an existing technology (Rycroft, 2006).The form of technology planning depends on the capabilities and requirements of a specific enterprise, but also on external determinants that affect its internal technological capabilities. Within the formulation of a technology strategy (TS), it is necessary that managers adequately incorporate different dimensions and needs of own...

Towards Fair Setting of Coefficients of Economic Difficulty: The Case of Interdisciplinary Study Fields

Jakub Fischer, Kristýna Vltavská, Jan Schatral

Acta Oeconomica Pragensia 2014, 22(2):85-94 | DOI: 10.18267/j.aop.433

The normative part represents the most important section of the funding scheme for educational activity of higher education institutions in the Czech Republic. The normative part depends particularly on the number of students and the values of the coefficients of economic difficulty that are assigned to the individual study programmes. This paper analyses similarity of the study fields that belong to study programmes with different coefficients of economic difficulty. Firstly, we compute the coefficient of similarity based on the share of the same subjects in both study fields. Secondly, we compare the economic difficulty of the rest of the subjects...
