A university ice hockey arena is set to be built in Prague. The City Council has joined forces with local universities.
The city of Prague is preparing to take a significant step in developing its sports infrastructure. A modern university ice hockey arena is set to be built in the capital, primarily serving students, but also youth teams, women’s hockey, and para ice hockey. A memorandum of cooperation has been signed by the Prague City Council, four leading universities, and the University Arena Prague initiative.
A Partnership Between the City and Universities
The following universities are involved in the project:
-
Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE)
-
Charles University (UK)
-
Czech Technical University in Prague (ČVUT)
-
Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (ČZU)
The aim of the memorandum is to jointly explore options for building a multifunctional arena primarily dedicated to university sports. The city has committed to finding a suitable site and supporting the preparation phase of the construction.
Reason? Capacity Shortages and Brain Drain
Currently, none of the universities in Prague has its own ice rink, and the existing facilities are long overbooked. Students who wish to pursue ice hockey at a higher level often have no choice but to study abroad—mainly in the USA or Canada—where university teams benefit from top-class infrastructure.
This project responds not only to the urgent lack of sports facilities but also to the desire to keep athletic talent in the Czech Republic.
What Will the Arena Offer?
According to available information, the planned arena will include:
-
An ice rink suitable for training and official games
-
Facilities for teams and referees
-
Regeneration and training areas
-
Accommodation for athletes
-
Additional space for education and administration
It is expected that at least 50% of the arena’s capacity will be allocated to university hockey. The remaining capacity will be used for youth teams, women’s hockey, and para hockey. Commercial use—such as public rentals—should help ensure the project’s financial sustainability.
