VŠE analyzes the economic impacts of MotoGP in Brno: Dozens of students participated in data collection
Prague University of Economics and Business (VŠE) is conducting a study focused on the economic impacts of the MotoGP in Brno. The aim is to evaluate how this major sporting event affects the regional economy and whether public investments in its support are worthwhile.
Field research: students in action
A team led by Associate Professor Mazouch, Dr. Karel, and Professor Fischer involved several dozen VŠE students in the project. The students collected data directly in the field from visitors to the Brno racetrack. For the students, it was an excellent opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice and contribute to real-world research that impacts public finance decision-making.
Despite challenging conditions – variable weather with rain and high temperatures – the students managed to reach over 1,000 respondents during the event.
The collected data will be used to:
-
estimate the direct impacts of the event (e.g., visitor spending on accommodation, transportation, and services), and
-
build Input-Output models that will also quantify secondary effects on the regional economy (including impacts on supply chains).
Results in August
The study results, to be published in August, may serve as a basis for assessing the rationale for supporting similar large-scale sporting events from public budgets.
