Honoris Causa Title for Professor M. Hashem Pesaran

On the 20th of May, Professor M. Hashem Pesaran, a leading world expert in econometrics, will receive the honorary degree Doctor oeconomiae honoris causa from the rector of the University of Economics, Prague (VŠE) professor Hana Machková. At this occassion Prof. Pesaran will give a short lecture called „Oil, Middle East and the Global Economy“.

The conferral ceremony will take place on 20th May 2016 at 11 a.m. in the Vencovského Aula. Students, pedagogues and graduates of VŠE as well as members of the public are invited to this solemn and joyous occasion. Please, register here.

H. Pesaran holds the John Elliot Chair in Economics, and is a Professor of Economics at the University of Southern California, where he is also the Director of the USC Dornsife Centre for Applied Financial Economics. He is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Cambridge. On the basis of a proposal made by the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics of the University of Ecomonics, Prague, on 23rd April, 2015, it was decided to award the honorary degree of “Doctor Oeconomiae Honoris Causa” to M. Hashem Pesaran. The decision was taken on 26th May, 2015, by the Scientific Council of the University of Economics, Prague.

The degree of Doctor Honoris Causa is awarded by the VŠE to those people who have made particularly important contributions to science, both theoretically and practically, especially in the economic sphere. The honorary doctorate which will be awarded to Professor M. Hashem Pesaran is in keeping with the VŠE’s profile as a leading scientific-pedagogical university. The degree also bears witness to the fact that the VŠE has developed, not only mainstream economic theory and practice, but also those alternative economic approaches which can help to develop the already existing economic models. Professor M. Hashem Peasaran is leading world expert in econometrics, quantitative analysis of financial markets, macroeconometric modeling, econometric analysis of time series and panel data. In addition he expresses his views on global economic problems, as well as on energy issues. His exceedingly wide range of expertise, and the fact he is one of the leading economists in the world, can serve as an inspiration for the academic community of the University of Economics, Prague.

Professor M. Hashem Pesaran has published more than 175 works in leading international journals. His work has also been published in 14 books. The last one is called Time Series and Panel Data Econometrics and is concerned with recent developments in time series and panel data techniques for the analysis of macroeconomic and financial data. The agency Thomson Reuters has ranked Professor Pesaran among the leading economists in the world today.

In 2013 Prof. M. Hashem Pesaran accepted the offer for cooperation with the platform: Dynamic Models in Economics (DYME). At DYME Workshop at the VŠE in June 2014 he gave a lecture on the topic „Debt, Inflation and Growth“.
