Henry Mintzberg became famous as a leading thinker in the field of management and in this discipline he challenged, or disproved, many established ideas and concepts. He is known for his contribution not only to the academic sphere, but also to the business world. His views have influenced and formed the largest professional authorities in contemporary management. Recently, he has been working as an academic at the world’s best universities, as well as in the capacity of consultant expert in management development worldwide. His crucial contribution is the innovative view he takes of managerial positions and managerial roles. He explores the daily life of the manager and based on his findings, he takes an alternative approach to the training and development of managers.
To gain a better insight into Professor Mintzberg’s various interests, one need only visit his website. Besides being an internationally acclaimed management guru and consultant, this prolific writer issues weekly TWOG’s (Tweet2Blog) on a variety of subjects that range from climate change to social activism. For example, although writing and teaching about management, political issues have also attracted his attention, and at times almost seem to dominate him. In his latest book entitled, Rebalancing Society (2015), he laments the fact that the term socialism has become a dirty word especially in the United States, leaving the impression that there is something wrong with all things social; while capitalism has come to represent all things right. However, Professor Mintzberg does possess a less somber side as well. He has also written a light-hearted piece on the opera, and a satirical book on his multiple experiences with airlines in general, to name just a few.
In addition to the two major international educational programs that he still manages today (The International Master’s in Practical Management and the International Master’s in Health Leadership), Professor Henry Mintzberg founded, and leads, a company called: Coaching Ourselves International, which specializes in alternative management training directly in the workplace.
