On Thursday, 6th April, 2017, Professor Hana Machková was elected member of the European University Association (EUA) Board for a period of four years (2017-2021). The EUA has around 850 members in nearly 50 European countries, making it the most comprehensive and representative body of European universities. The Rector of the VŠE was nominated by the Czech Rectors’ Conference and was elected by second highest number of votes.

Membership in the EUA is comprised of both individual universities, around 800 in total, and collective bodies of universities (including 33 national Rectors’ Conferences, university associations and five associations or networks of higher education institutions). The EUA also has 25 affiliates ranging from universities outside Europe, to research bodies and other partner organisations with which the Association has close links. 17 million students are enrolled in EUA member institutions. The EUA’s primary goal is to ensure the most favourable framework conditions for universities in the future, for example, through its member consultation for Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+.

The EUA Board consists of nine members, including the EUA President, who chairs the Board. It meets at least three times a year, and is responsible for the preparation and implementation of the Association’s policies, the planning of its activities and the management of its affairs.

Professor Machková was elected together with the Rector of the University of Leicester (Great Britain), Professor Boyel, as well as with the emeritus Rector of the University College Cork (Ireland), Professor Murphy. They have all became member of the EUA Board for a period of four years.

“I congratulate the Rector of the University of Economics Prague, Professor Hana Machková, upon her election to the most important association of universities in Europe. The Czech Rectors’ Conference nominated Professor Machková because of her great international standing and renown, and I am proud of her success in this secret ballot. It is great news, not only for her, but also for the world of Czech higher education as a whole, which has a strong name in Europe,” said the President of the Czech Rectors’ Conference, and Rector of Charles University, Professor Tomáš Zima.
