QS World University Rankings is one of the most prestigious international rankings of higher education institutions. It has been published annually since 2004. Currently, the 800 best universities in the world are listed in the ranking (while according to some estimates, the total number of higher education institutions in the world amounts to 20 thousand).

The methodology of QS Rankings has been gradually enhanced but is relatively stable; it is based on six criteria, i.e. academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty student ratio, citations per faculty, proportion of international students, and proportion of international faculty. Additionally, the ranking enables comparison of universities by regions, by subject, etc.

This year, for the first time, the University of Economics, Prague (VŠE) together with Brno University of Technology have also been listed in the QS World University Rankings – at 651st to 700th position. Among Czech universities, the best scores go to Charles University in Prague (233rd), the Czech Technical University in Prague (451st to 460th) and Masaryk University, Brno is 551st to 600th. Technical subjects and natural sciences dominate the higher education rankings worldwide. This fact underlines the significance of VŠE’s success.

The QS World ranking is led by British and American universities. Other European institutions (apart from British ones) appear only in the second ten (ETH Zurich is 12th and Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne is 19th).
