For the University of Economics, Prague (VŠE), academic year 2012/2013 was very successful. VŠE is one of the key public education institutions and the most important business, management, public administration and economics university in the Czech Republic. In addition, it is a high quality partner institution in the field of international cooperation. The university hosted a lot of scientific conferences and seminars, as well as social, cultural and sports events.

In academic year 2012/2013, there were nearly 20,000 students at VŠE. There were 3,345 students at the Faculty of Finance and Accounting; 5,004 students at the Faculty of International Relations; 3,725 students at the Faculty of Business Administration; 3,232 at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics; 2,723 students at the Faculty of Economics and 1,497 students at the Faculty of Management in the town of Jindřichův Hradec. Applicants are constantly interested in studying at VŠE. There were 15,195 applications to study at VŠE in bachelor programs, exceeding more than three times the programs´ capacity; 4,211 students were enrolled in the first year of studies.

International Cooperation

In 2012/2013, VŠE cooperated with more than 200 partner universities from 51 countries. It offered to Czech and foreign students a broad spectrum of accredited bachelor´s and master´s study programs and specialized courses in foreign languages. The number of incoming and outgoing students has been increasing steadily. In 2012/2013, for instance, there were 654 incoming students within the Exchange Program, Central and East European Studies Program and the summer schools organized by VŠE for Arizona State University and the University of Austin, Texas, McCombs School of Business. Most incoming students were from partner universities in the USA, France and Germany.

In addition, VŠE was awarded with “2nd Business School in Eastern Europe” in the ranking by Eduniversal. The university took part in the success of the CEMS MIM master’s program too. The program was ranked by Financial Times (FT) as the 3rd best program worldwide in the category of “Masters in Management” in 2012.

Scientific & Research Activities

The university has been involved in research projects and the support of publication activities by its academics and students. Moreover, VŠE issues many scientific journals. Two of these journals – Politická Ekonomie and Prague Economics Papers are well respected journals with a significant increase in impact factors for 2012. Several VŠE journals such as Acta Oeconomica Pragensis or European Financial and Accounting Journal are listed as peer reviewed journals without an impact factor by the Research, Development and Innovation Council, and advisory body to the Government of the Czech Republic. In November 2012, the 6th year of Day of Science at Prague Universities – Scientia Pragensis took place at VŠE.

Cooperation with Practice

VŠE continued in successful cooperation with its corporate partners as well. Česká Spořitelna has been the university’s General Partner for years with the partnership agreement being renewed in January 2013. The main corporate partners of the university are ČSOB, Deloitte, Ernst&Young, Komerční banka, KMPG and PWC. In academic year 2012/2013, corporate partners were 3M, Česká pojišťovna, Czech Chamber of Commerce, Economia, Konrad Adenauer Stifftung, L´Oréal Czech Republic, Microsoft, TESCO, Kooperativa Vienna Insurance Group, Procter & Gamble, Plzeňský Prazdroj and Škoda Auto. In addition, the two lastly named companies are CEMS international partners and the last one is a key partner of Honors Academia Program by the Faculty of Business Administration. Moreover, the companies have a chance of presenting themselves at a job fair called Šance, which is organized by the VŠE Development and Counselling Centre.

Sports achievements by students and social events

For the achievements in sports by VŠE students, Jitka Bartoníčková, of the Faculty of Finance and Accounting, can be mentioned. Together with her team-mates, she took part in the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The team finished seventh in the women‘s 4×400 meter relay final. A month earlier, the very same relay team won the bronze medal at the European Athletics Championship 2012 in Helsinki. In addition, VŠE students were highly successful at the 12th Year of Czech Academic Games. In team sports, the most successful were the VŠE basketball team, the handball players and swimmers. In individual sports, the university was represented most successfully in gymnastics. Moreover, VŠE’s ice-hockey team won the silver medal in the annual ice-hockey tournament. Among its most successful social events, were VŠE’s Representative Ball taking place in December 2012 and Alumni Day with VŠE in May 2013.
