For the University of Economics, Prague (VŠE), academic year 2013/2014 was a year of very important events. The Academic Senate of VŠE elected Prof. Hana Machková as the university’s new president. In addition, four faculties of VŠE have elected new deans: Faculty of Finance and Accounting (doc. Mejzlík), Faculty of Business Administration (prof. Nový), Faculty of Informatics and Statistics (doc. Marek), and Faculty of Economics (doc. Ševčík). 

In academic year 2013/2014, there were 18,584 students at VŠE. There were 3,160 students at the Faculty of Finance and Accounting; 4,665 students at the Faculty of International Relations; 3,547 students at the Faculty of Business Administration; 3,090 at the Faculty of Informatics and Statistics; 2,562 students at the Faculty of Economics and 1,458 students at the Faculty of Management in the town of Jindřichův Hradec. Applicants are constantly interested in studying at VŠE. There were 13,623 applications to study at VŠE in bachelor programs, exceeding more than three times the programs´ capacity; 3,877 students were enrolled in the first year of studies.

International Cooperation

In 2013/2014, VŠE cooperated with more than 200 partner universities from 53 countries. It offered to Czech and foreign students a broad spectrum of accredited bachelor´s and master´s study programs and specialized courses in foreign languages. The block seminars of foreign visiting professors were very popular among students. The number of incoming and outgoing students has been increasing steadily. In 2013/2014, there were 623 incoming students within the Exchange Program. Another 109 students came within the framework of summer schools organized by VŠE. Most incoming students were from partner universities in the USA, France and Germany.

According to the prestigious QS World Rankings, VŠE is – for the first time – among the 700 Best Universities in the World. And when the Financial Times published the results of an evaluation of European universities for 2013, VŠE ranked 75th in Europe. In the ranking of the best European schools, 18 countries are represented but there are only three universities from Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, the university took part in the success of the CEMS MIM master’s program too. The program was ranked by Financial Times (FT) as the 7th best program worldwide in the category of “Masters in Management” in 2013.

Scientific & Research Activities and Cooperation with the Professional Sector

The university has been involved in research projects and the support of publication activities by its academics and students. Moreover, VŠE issues many scientific journals. Two of these journals – Politická Ekonomie and Prague Economics Papers – are well respected journals with a significant increase in impact factors. In 2013, VŠE organized 48 scientific conferences, of which 38 were international scientific conferences.

VŠE continued in successful cooperation with its corporate partners as well. Česká Spořitelna has been the university’s general partner for many years. The main corporate partners of the university are ČSOB, Deloitte, EY, Komerční banka, KMPG and PWC. In academic year 2013/2014, corporate partners were Česká pojišťovna, Economia, Czech Chamber of Commerce, Kooperativa, L´Oréal Czech Republic, Microsoft, Procter & Gamble, SwissLife, Plzeňský Prazdroj and Škoda Auto. In addition, the two lastly named companies are CEMS international partners and the last one is a key partner of the Honors Academia Program by the Faculty of Business Administration. In June, the rector of VŠE signed a new agreement on cooperation with the pharmaceutical company MSD (in the United States and Canada known as Merck). Moreover, the companies have a chance of presenting themselves at a job fair called Šance, which is organized by VŠE’s Development and Counselling Centre.

Sports Achievements by Students and Social Events

There are many students who are talented in sports at VŠE. The results of the 13th Czech Academic Games support this because VŠE ranked 10th in a competition of 44 Czech universities. VŠE also organized the “Rector´s Sports Day” in April. Among its most successful social events, were VŠE’s Representative Ball taking place in December 2013 and Alumni Day with VŠE in May 2014. VŠE also socially supports benefit actions. For example, in April 2014, an event “Donate blood at VŠE” took place at the university in cooperation with the cell transfusion station of the General University Hospital in Prague.
